1. Core Formula & Variable Definitions

Hydraulic Institute ANSI/HI 9.6.1 — NPSH Margin · ASME B73.1 — Specification for Horizontal End Suction Centrifugal Pumps for Chemical Process (NPSH per HI) · API 610 — Centrifugal Pumps for Petroleum, Petrochemical and Natural Gas Industries

NPSHa = (Ps − Pv)/(ρ·g) + zs − hf

Margin = NPSHa − NPSHr  ·  Ratio = NPSHa / NPSHr

Standard HI 9.6.1Companions B73.1 · API 610Hero NPSHaCheck Margin · Ratio

NPSHa is the suction-system available net positive suction head for centrifugal pumps (mechanical / rotating equipment selection). Ps is absolute free-surface pressure, Pv liquid vapor pressure at pumping temperature, zs signed static head (flooded +, lift −), and hf suction friction/fitting losses. Compare to OEM NPSHr from the pump curve at the operating capacity. HI 9.6.1 defines margin practice; ASME B73.1 and API 610 expect the purchaser to set required margin. Densities and Pv are screening curves — not a process simulator.

  • Ps (Surface pressure (abs)) — Absolute pressure on the liquid free surface (open tank ≈ Patm).
  • Pv (Vapor pressure) — Liquid vapor pressure at the pumping temperature.
  • ρ (Liquid density) — Mass density used to convert pressures to head (kg/m³ or lb/ft³).
  • zs (Static suction head) — Geometric height from free surface to pump CL (+ flooded / − lift).
  • hf (Suction losses) — Friction + fittings + strainer head loss on the suction line.
  • NPSHa (Available NPSH) — System-side net positive suction head available at the pump.
  • NPSHr (Required NPSH) — Pump-required NPSH from the OEM performance curve at capacity.

2. Margin practice (screening)

Codes define NPSH terms; the purchaser / HI guidance sets how much margin is enough for the service.

HI 9.6.1 marginService-dependent

Margin = NPSHa − NPSHr (often also tracked as a ratio). Continuous cold-water duties commonly target ≥ ~1.1× NPSHr; confirm HI charts for the duty.

API 610 purchaser marginProject-specified

API 610 expects NPSHa to exceed NPSHr by the margin stated by the purchaser — do not assume a universal default.

Hot / volatile liquidsLarger margin

Boiler feed, condensate near boiling, and light hydrocarbons need more margin than cold water — Hvp rises fast with temperature.

Suction pipingFOT eccentric · short run

Keep suction short and flooded when practical. Eccentric reducers flat-on-top to avoid vapor pockets.

Quick Reference Lookup Table

Illustrative atmospheric cases (this app, hf as noted, open-tank Ps)
CaseNPSHa (approx.)Flag vs typical NPSHr
Water 20 °C · flooded 2 m · hf 1 m~11.1 mComfortable vs 3.5 m
Water 20 °C · lift 5 m · hf 2 m~3.1 mCheck vs 4 m NPSHr
Water 80 °C · flooded 2 m · hf 1 m~6.7 mStill often OK / thinner
Water ~100 °C · flooded 1 m · hf 0.5 m~0.5 mNear boiling — high risk
Light HC 40 °C · flooded 3 mLower than waterPrefer flooded suction

3. Applicability

Screening fluids: fresh water, seawater, condensate (water-like), and light hydrocarbon. Not a multi-component flash or dissolved-gas model.

Group / RegimeRange / ConditionLimit / CriterionEngineering Notes
Fresh water / condensate≈ 1–100 °C Antoine PvN/A — NPSH energy headsNear boiling, Pv ≈ Patm and NPSHa collapses unless pressurized or strongly flooded.
SeawaterAmbient screeningρ ≈ 1.025× waterUses denser ρ and slightly reduced Pv vs fresh water.
Light hydrocarbonScreening Reid-style PvLower ρ · higher PvOrder-of-magnitude only — use project fluid properties for design.

Code Applicability & Safety Boundaries

  • Field screening only — not a substitute for OEM NPSHr, HI 9.6.1 project margin charts, or API 610 datasheet guarantees.
  • NPSHr must come from the pump curve at the operating capacity (and speed).
  • Dissolved gas, air entrainment, and transient startup/surge are outside this calculator.
  • Export / PDF is a suction screening sheet — not a stamped pump selection report.

4. Step-by-Step Worked Example

Field VerificationShow

Step-by-Step Worked Example: Water 20 °C · flooded 2 m

Screen NPSHa for an atmospheric fresh-water centrifugal pump suction: flooded static head 2 m, suction losses 1 m, OEM NPSHr 3.5 m at the operating capacity (HI 9.6.1 / ASME B73.1 field screening).

Fluid:Fresh water · 20 °CPs:1.01325 bar a (open tank)zs:+2.0 m (flooded)hf:1.0 mNPSHr:3.5 m (OEM curve)
1

Form Ha and Hvp

ρ ≈ 998 kg/m³ · Ps = 101.325 kPa · Pv ≈ 2.34 kPa → Ha ≈ 10.35 m · Hvp ≈ 0.24 m.
Result:Ha ≈ 10.35 m · Hvp ≈ 0.24 m
2

Assemble NPSHa

NPSHa = 10.35 + 2.0 − 0.24 − 1.0 ≈ 11.11 m.
Result:NPSHa ≈ 11.1 m
3

Margin vs NPSHr

Margin ≈ 11.1 − 3.5 = 7.6 m · Ratio ≈ 11.1 / 3.5 ≈ 3.2× — comfortable for typical cold-water continuous duty; still confirm project HI/API margin policy.
Result:Margin ≈ 7.6 m · Ratio ≈ 3.2×

Open /water-20c-flooded-2m for the live default case. Hot water or suction lift cases shrink margin quickly via Hvp and −zs.

Conclusion: For cold atmospheric water with modest flooded head, NPSHa usually exceeds typical OEM NPSHr with comfortable margin. Re-run with the actual temperature, lift, and hf before freezing the pump suction layout.

5. How to screen pump NPSH & cavitation

  1. 1

    Select fluid & temperature

Sets density ρ and vapor pressure Pv (screening curves).

  2. 2

    Set surface pressure & arrangement

Open tank ≈ atmosphere. Choose flooded head or suction lift and enter |z|.

  3. 3

    Enter hf and OEM NPSHr

Estimate suction losses; take NPSHr from the pump curve at operating flow.

  4. 4

    Read NPSHa, margin, and ratio

If NPSHa < NPSHr, treat as cavitation risk. Confirm HI / API project margin before approving the layout.
