90° LR: A = 1.5 × NPSin = 38.1 × NPS · 90° SR: A = 1.0 × NPSin = 25.4 × NPS
45° LR: B ≈ 0.625 × NPSin · Equal Tee: C · Reducer: H · Cap: E
ASME B16.9 / ASME B16.25 Butt-Weld Fitting Center-to-End & Bevel Prep
ASME B16.9 standardizes overall envelope dimensions, center-to-end takeouts, and manufacturing tolerances for factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings (NPS 1/2 through NPS 48). Long-radius 90° elbows follow A = 1.5 × NPS in inches (38.1 mm per NPS). Short-radius 90° elbows follow A = 1.0 × NPS (25.4 mm per NPS). 45° LR elbows use B ≈ 0.625 × NPS in inches with published standard overrides (e.g. NPS 12 = 229 mm). Equal tees use center-to-end dimension C; concentric/eccentric reducers use overall length H; pipe caps use height E. Weld bevel ends follow ASME B16.25 (standard 37.5° bevel with 1.6 mm root face).
- A (Elbow Center-to-End Dimension) — Distance from the center of curvature to either weld bevel end face for 90° LR and SR elbows (mm or in).
- B (45° Elbow Center-to-End Dimension) — Center-to-face distance for 45° long-radius elbows (mm or in).
- C / M (Tee Center-to-End Dimension) — Run center-to-end (C) and branch center-to-end (M) for equal and reducing tees (mm or in).
- H (Reducer Overall Length) — End-to-end length for concentric and eccentric reducers per B16.9 tables (mm or in).
- E (Cap Height) — Total length/height from weld bevel face to outer crown center for standard pipe caps (mm or in).
- OD / t (Bevel End Matching Geometry) — Outside diameter and nominal wall thickness matching the connected ASME B36.10M / B36.19M pipe schedule (mm or in).
2. Allowances, Tolerances & Standards
ASME B16.9 defines precise product tolerances on center-to-end takeout, off-plane angularity, and wall thickness to guarantee accurate spool prefabrication and field alignment.
For NPS ≤ 2½: ±1.5 mm; for NPS 3 to 8: ±2.0 mm; for NPS 10 to 18: ±2.0 mm; for NPS 20 to 24: ±3.0 mm. Essential for piping spool cutting lengths and isometric fit-up.
Per ASME B16.9 Para. 2.2, the minimum wall thickness at any point of the fitting body must not be less than 87.5% of nominal pipe schedule wall thickness (incorporating the standard -12.5% mill tolerance).
For wall thickness t ≤ 22 mm, bevel angle is 37.5° ± 2.5° with a 1.6 mm root land. For t > 22 mm, compound bevel (37.5° transitioning to 10°) is required.
Angular misalignment between bevel face and true 90°/45° plane is limited to 0.8 mm for NPS ≤ 4, 1.6 mm for NPS 5 to 8, and 2.4 mm for NPS ≥ 10.

3. Material & Code Limitations
Butt-weld fittings are seamless or welded wrought components manufactured from pipe, plate, or forging billets. Fitting pressure-temperature rating equals that of seamless straight pipe of matching material and schedule.
| Material Group | Temperature Range | Allowable Stress / Limit | Engineering Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A234 WPB (Wrought Carbon Steel) | -29 °C to 427 °C (-20 °F to 800 °F) | Matches ASTM A106 Gr. B Pipe | Universal fitting grade for carbon steel piping systems. Manufactured from A106B pipe or A285/A516 plate with full radiography. |
| ASTM A420 WPL6 (Low-Temperature CS) | -45 °C to 427 °C (-50 °F to 800 °F) | Matches ASTM A333 Gr. 6 Pipe | Impact-tested fitting grade for low-temperature service, refrigerated gas, and cold climate process units. |
| ASTM A403 WP304L / WP316L (Stainless Steel) | -196 °C to 450 °C (-320 °F to 842 °F) | Matches ASTM A312 TP304L/316L | Class WP-S (seamless) or WP-W (welded with RT). Excellent corrosion resistance for chemical, pharmaceutical, and offshore utilities. |
| ASTM A815 UNS S31803 / S32750 (Duplex) | -50 °C to 280 °C (-58 °F to 536 °F) | Matches ASTM A790 Duplex Pipe | High strength and chloride pitting resistance (PREN ≥ 35 for 2205, ≥ 42 for Super Duplex 2507). |
Code Applicability & Safety Boundaries
- LR vs SR Elbow Hydraulic Resistance: Short-radius (SR) elbows have an equivalent length L/D ≈ 50 compared to LR elbows L/D ≈ 30. SR fittings should not be used in slurry, high-velocity gas, or erosion-prone services.
- Reducer Slope & Cavitation: In pump suction lines, eccentric reducers must be installed flat-on-top (FOT) to prevent air/vapor pocket formation and pump cavitation.
- Code Pressure Equivalence: Per ASME B16.9 Para. 2.1, the pressure design rating of a B16.9 fitting is identical to straight seamless pipe of matching wall thickness and material specification; no de-rating factor is applied.
4. Step-by-Step Worked Example
Field VerificationCalculate the exact pipe cut length for an NPS 4 (DN 100) Schedule 40 carbon steel spool connecting two 90° LR butt-weld elbows with a total center-to-center distance of 1,800 mm, accounting for elbow takeouts and welding root gaps.
Calculate 90° LR Elbow Center-to-End Takeout (A)
Long-radius 90° elbow takeout is exactly 1.5 times nominal pipe size in inches (152.4 mm).
Determine Total Fitting Takeout for Both Elbows
Total center-to-face distance deducted from overall center-to-center dimension.
Account for Welding Root Gap Deductions
Root gap must be subtracted from pipe cut length so final fabricated spool matches 1,800 mm.
Calculate Net Pipe Spool Cut Length (L_cut)
Pipe shop cuts exactly 1,488.8 mm of NPS 4 Schedule 40 bare pipe.
Verify Fitting Bevel Match & Material Rating
ASME B16.9 fitting pressure rating matches straight ASTM A106 Gr. B Sch 40 pipe.
