ASME B31.3 Chapter VI & ASME Section VIII Div 1 Pressure Testing
ASME B31.3 paragraph 345.4.2 mandates that the minimum hydrostatic test pressure of a piping system be not less than 1.5 times the internal design pressure, adjusted by the ratio of the allowable stress at test temperature (St) to that at design temperature (S). When piping operates at elevated temperatures, cold testing at unadjusted 1.5P under-stresses the system compared to hot operating conditions. Test hoop stress must be verified below 90% of material yield strength (Sy) to prevent permanent plastic deformation.

2. Allowances, Tolerances & Standards
Field pressure testing requires calibrated instrumentation, systematic air venting, and compliant hold times to guarantee leak-tight integrity.
Per ASME B40.100, gauges must be calibrated within 30 days. Test gauge range must be between 1.5× and 4× test pressure (ideally dial reads at 50% ~ 60% full scale). Two calibrated gauges required.
ASME B31.3 requires holding at test pressure for at least 10 minutes, after which pressure may be reduced to design pressure for complete visual examination of all flanged and welded joints.
In tall piping columns and vertical pipe racks, liquid head adds 9.81 kPa (0.098 bar / 1.42 psi) per vertical meter at the bottom drain blind; the lowest point must not exceed the 90% SMYS hoop limit.
All high points must have open vents during water filling to purge trapped air pockets. Trapped air compresses elastically, creating explosive blast risks upon failure.

Pressure testing introduces extreme mechanical stresses. Water temperature and pneumatic energy release pose severe hazards if not rigorously controlled.

- Yield Stress Limit Check: If calculated test pressure Pt results in a test hoop stress σh > 0.90 Sy in any straight pipe or fitting, Pt must be reduced to the maximum pressure that keeps hoop stress ≤ 0.90 Sy per B31.3 Para. 345.4.2(c).
