When piping operates hot, design allowable S is lower than ambient St. Testing cold at plain 1.5P under-stresses the system relative to hot operation. Pt = 1.5 × P × (St/S) raises the cold test pressure so the metal sees about 150% of the design condition (ASME B31.3 para. 345.4.2). This calculator defaults St/S = 1.0 and lets you set St, S, or St/S in Advanced 1.2.
